With over 142 activist groups in 24 states opposing data center developments, concerns over environmental impact, AI usage, and rising electricity bills are driving a populist uprising. The rapid growth of the AI and cloud computing industries, with construction spending on data centers skyrocketing 331% since 2021, has brought these previously behind-the-scenes facilities into the spotlight.
